I am playing basketball for the 3rd time in as many weeks since the doc ok'ed me to go back to normal activities. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;center&gt;&lt;a href='http://picasaweb.google.com/Beninark/BloggerPictures?authkey=Gv1sRgCMHt06fa-fb-rwE#5430123410534854722'&gt;&lt;img src='http://lh6.ggpht.com/_7Nyev4HdKZ8/S1useMt2cEI/AAAAAAAAA00/5lS10c8AalY/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='281' height='210' style='margin:5px'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/center&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A year ago in February I tore my ACL on this very court with many of the people in the photo there to witness it. I had surgery on December 17th to repair the tear. When the doc got in there he found that it had repaired itself. Apparently this is rather rare even with partials. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I enjoy Basketball because you see how people really are on the inside. Emotion comes through in a way that is socially acceptable and inturn reveals the true personality. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I honestly am scared everytime I have stepped out on the court. Afraid of tearing my ACL again. But with that in mind I refuse to sit on the side line in life. I know currently a lot of people see past events in black and white. I am not sure I completely do this but...I do envision some events in the color of the paintings, photographs of the time. For example: I for some reason I envision the 70's as being very vibrant in colors along with a lot of earth tones but without the sharpness of modern images. Almost in a slight blurred way that differentiates hd television from normal (analog?) televisions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Here is a picture of a sign I took not too long ago. The place was called Venture. From what I can remember they were something like wal-mart before wal-mart built super centers. I guess I should actually tell who she is...From the best I can tell from Wikipedia...Her name is: &lt;b&gt;Alison Sudol, &lt;/b&gt;she was born 27 days after I was....also from reading...and I am making an assumption here...I would guess she is a Christian (Woohoo!) as well just by looking at some of the authors (such as CS Lewis, and writing a Narnia style book series) she likes. It has been a long stinkin time since I have wrote here. I really could care less who if anyone reads this. I have given up on looking at page counts to focus on content.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This will turn into a space for me to read later on. Therefore I will put my random thoughts and quotes about what is going on.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's get started shall we.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Currently reading: Blue Like Jazz&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Great book so far. More thoughts about it tomorrow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;      Also have started up reading the new testament again. I am in the middle of Luke.  I have never made it this far in reading straight through. Of course I have read bits and pieces here and there in church and what not. I have read through Matthew probably 10 times but never could make it though Mark for some reason. Not that Mark was bad. I just became unfocused. Needless to say I am running into a few random things I have never read before.  But nothing ground shaking. i.e. I read about the brothers of thunder wanting to call down fire from heaven for not accepting them into a town.  Odd...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And I am listening to Dune Messiah on audio book now. So far I preferred the original Dune to this book. And with this is generally a sign of projects needing to be completed, exams, homework, and late nights in the engineering building.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some times you are granted a gift though...and in this case we went and visited Beaver Dam. It was an amazing experience. I took as many pictures as I was able to and will talk about the rest.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Beaver dam is apart of a lock and dam system that covers NW Arkansas and SW Missouri.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This particular dam was made back in the 60's. The design shows on the inside. The insides are painted in colors that I imagine the 60's coated in. The control room walls were a mix of soft browns and a light green. The kind of green you see on all old machines. I couldn't tell you what half the things do in there or how they are operated. Everything had lights and knobs as if it were from the Star Trek series of the same era.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We were able to see the, for lack of better words, giant axles that are connected to the turbines. They consist of a solid metal shaft that is some where in the neighborhood of three feet in diameter. When spinning they were only spinning at something around 90 rpm. I can only imagine the amount of force to get that much weight moving that quick.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now for the Dam part of the operation. (And yes our group revisited every single "dam" joke from Vegas Vacation and then some) The dam itself as you can see from the pictures is pretty big. It is from top to bottom about 250' tall. Yeah like looking down the length of a football field. The width at the bottom if I remember correctly is in the neighborhood of 170'. And there are tunnels all through it. I had never realized it but most dams have tunnels through out their structure.  One of the reasons is to help with drainage since concrete "leaks". Another is to have instruments. One of the main ones is the "Tilt-o-meter". This meter is a string that goes from the top to the bottom of the structure through a pipe. Basically this device shows how much the dam is tilting due to pressure of the water. There was a red line on a little beyond where the pendulum was and asked what that was for and what they would do if it got that far. The operator just looked at me and said, if it gets that far I am running. They had no restrictions in taking pictures in this area. Since light is not source dependent it would only have to over come the .75 SoL.  This means yes it would make it to us right?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Turns out the answer is NO. Here is where my brain broke for about an hour. I totally forgot about the universe is expanding. It is a HP 2730p. 1.86 ghz, 120 GB hard drive, 3 GB of ram and its a touch screen. I don't know how I feel about it right now. It is a lot of money but I feel that I made the best choice...just not sure if economically it was the best one. I haven't splurged in a while so I guess I am splurging now? Oh well, I'll give my review of it soon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I also have recieved my certifcation to test concrete by the ACI. This makes me happy. Maybe it will get me a summer time job.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Below is a video of our compression tests on some concrete samples we made. The concrete we batched surpased 20'000 psi which in turn gave us a 10 percent bonus in my Structural Materials class. While watching the video you may want to turn the volume down as some one lets out an explitive when the concrete finally gives way. I am in the background as well. Well I do...I am guessing they are making some form of a slurry wall to help stabilize the ground? They are adding an addition to the parking deck to the right. Any ways they are driving these things into the ground during the middle of the National Missionary Convention. They procedded to laugh when they figured out what I was saying. Apparently the building was funded by the Bank of Oklahoma(Interesting with the current banking crisis ehh?).  This in causes the correct saying to be the B.O.K. (Phonetically: Bee Ohhh Kay) Center. This got me thinking. How often do we as humans receive second chances? I know I have personally received an amount that could not be counted, yet, I casually act like it is perfectly normal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How amazing is it that we are able to start back at square one? You can do this on the spiritual level by asking forgiveness and repenting (turning away), say you are sorry, or worse comes to worse move to another location where people dont know you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This episode...whether it's intended affect was or was not this... reminded me how blessed I truly am. For all intents and purposes I have the world on a string. I am young, going to school, single, not in debt, and living in one of the richest countries in the world. What more can I ask for? Well since I am an American there is a list about a mile long...but how much do I really need? None... My greatest fear is doing poorly on a test or not getting married by 30... What was worse there was no where for me to go but up. This was definitely case. I had rappelled down a cliff face to get into the mess I was in. As a engineering major I have taken classes on material designs and the loads the could take. I had complete faith in the equipment. The going down was the easy part. Manchester is probably the team I like the most.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This in it's self is not all that interesting I must admit. What is interesting is the financial markets.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know I know...you are wondering what in the world do the financial markets have to do with a soccer team in England.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here's what it has to do with it. Manchester United's main sponsor is AIG Financial. If you have been watching the news as of late then you know that there is a mess going on with AIG.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;font-size:85%;" &gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);"&gt;History of what is going on with AIG&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(255, 102, 102);font-size:85%;" &gt;To give a brief run down of why they are in dire straights...here goes...AIG loans money, the United States has a law from the depression era saying they must have a certain percentage of cash on hand for all the investments. They had given loans for homes and these "loans" are considered liquid assets. Home prices have dropped since they handed out the loans...there for they are not able to sell them as much as they would have. Therefore in theory they do not have that percentage of cash on hand to that the government requires and the government took them over. Whats sad is if they could just ride this out, they would be just fine a couple years from now. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yesterday, the US government bailed AIG out of the mess. They bought the company basically.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Back to soccer....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Since AIG owns the largest share of the Manchester United Football Club....The United States now owns the Manchester United Football Club kinda sorta...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;USA USA USA...wait...this is bad...when did the government get in the business of sponsoring a soccer team in another country?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:85%;"&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(51, 204, 255);"&gt;The picture below is a picture of London during World War II. I am by no means excusing myself from this criticism. I am sure I am the worst among them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Life is an adventure that happens everyday. When was the last time you tasted what you ate? I am not talking about just passively noticing that the taste is pleasing to the senses. I am talking about savoring the bite and noticing the intricacies of each herb and spice.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I find so much of the time I f&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;ocus on the easy things in life. Not because they are the best thing around but because it is the easiest to do most of the time. I am trying to change this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I love this quote by JFK&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;"&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;This type of idea might be the one I went into engineering. Well that and a host of other reasons like I hope that my future job will provide enough money so my future(assuming I am able to find one ;p) wife wont have to work. I think kids grow up better when they are raised by their parents and not a day care center.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wow I got way off topic there...anyways...&lt;br /&gt;My goal for the next week is to experience life...actually drink in the world that the Lord has created for us. But! We are experiencing torrential down pours here in the lovely portion of northwest Arkansas.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ok that may be a gross exaggeration but it has been raining fairly solid for the last 10 hours with no signs of it stopping with in the next day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Two years ago I went with a church group down to Pass Christian, Mississippi. Before that point in my life I had never seen the damage of a hurricane. I saw foundations of houses with the house no where to be found. I heard stories of houses being lifted up over 20 feet and dropped 200 yards away. Obviously the house was not livable anymore for the fact it had no foundation. Jesus explains the need for foundations...and as a civil engineering major I am blessed to find out the mathematical reasons why it is needed...not that I enjoy it that much. :)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That being said here are perhaps the more disturbing pictures I took while helping rebuild from Katrina. (&lt;span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);"&gt;Editors Note: These pictures are a year after the actual hurricane in '06...still so much devistation at that time.&lt;/span&gt;)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is a picture of a house that by all modern definitions of the word was a NICE house...it had a minimum of two stories and a gated fence that would probably cost more then my house alone. There is...well at least there was a video on youtube about what happened in the library during the hurricane. I dont remember the specifics but for some reason there were people that were trapped in the building. While waters were surging around the police cheif inside was forced to shoot holes in the doors. They tend to be very pompous in their attitude even towards their consumers and especially against those that do not consume their products.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That being said....Apple has started a new way to buy cell phones...yes they are still linked to a network but they have taken the first step in breaking away from the old model. Apple now has people buying phones from their stores. Soon hopefully we will move to the model that is prominent in Europe where you will buy your phone separately from your service. This will hopefully open up more competition and drive down prices.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Apple has also raised the bar with the iphone. Granted the iphone has some lackluster qualities...but the hardware is great. The fact that Apple has had over a year and a 2nd generation phone dropped with no copy and paste is just asinine. This is one of those reasons I dislike apple.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But as the saying goes...the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Apple with the iphone raising the bar has made other phone companies increase the qualities of their products...this is again good for the consumer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of these I think that has benefited from this Research in Motion and their famed Blackberry. They are on the verge of releasing the Bold in the states and a month away from releasing a touch screen and flip phone version. Now I dont think RIM would have pushed for a touch screen had it not been for Apple.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I personally am looking forward to the flip blackberry (codenamed kickstart). I already have the pearl and think that a flip version will be a great marketing decision for RIM.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Oh well that is my rant for now...I await like many others for Apple to have their little event on sept 9th? Everything went well. Of course since I have not finished my schooling, I am not certified to make official drawings. Btw what other religion has no grave for their holy man? I honestly don't know...all of them have died and not come back to life...if you know of one please send word, I wouldn't mind researching it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I find it funny that three of the main religions (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam) of the world recognize Jesus, and the fact that he lived, yet some atheist still deny he existed at all.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Alas, I am not here to debate the divinity of Jesus. I wasnt really sure all the hype around them was worth it. It turns out that it was worth all the hype it recieved.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have used this bottle almost every other day since I had bought it. It cost me $8.99 and has been worth every cent.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I worked at multi-denomination city wide home painting camp this year. It was the hottest week of the year with temperatures rising about the century mark everyday. Every night before going out I would fill my Nalgene 75% full and freeze it. The bottle would be completely full of Ice the next morning. The lid would be frozen shut from the excess water left around the rim from the fill up the night before. The bottle has made it out perfectly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Since then it has been banged around and dropped off roofs. Well, I suppose... we would have to discuss terms, of course...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Churchill&lt;/b&gt;: Would you sleep with me for five pounds?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Lady&lt;/b&gt;: Mr. Churchill, what kind of woman do you think I am?!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Churchill&lt;/b&gt;: Madam, we've already established that. Now we are haggling about the price.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;-Begs the question, who are you really?-&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;When you read this, you think that is a no brainer, it would be a sin to do so…of course I am assuming everyone that is reading this will be of strong Christian moral beliefs. But when you get to the guts of this…is there something in the back of your head saying…wow that money sure could solve a lot of problems in my life.  Therein lies the conflict of the heart.  The funny thing is you could actually talk yourself into do this. Tell yourself how selfless you would be with the money and how it would be for the greater good and how you sin all the time while speeding on the highway so what is one more sin?&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;I guess it is true that you cant serve two masters…&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;Is this one of those moments where the good of the many out weigh the good of the few? That is something you would have to ask yourself for it is a heart issue. I admit it would be tempting to say yes, but I would say no thank you. I am not asking what other people think on that issue, if you want to comment on it I wouldn’t mind reading them, it is a very interesting subject and something that should be rolled around in one’s mind.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;Now for the main topic, &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;A few weeks back Fox News reporter, Steve Centanni and camera man Olaf Wiig, were abducted. You may have heard this story, you may have not. I did not see much press coverage given to it but I don’t read a lot of newspapers. The muslim jihadist took them back to their place where they were held captive at gunpoint. Here comes the kicker. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;This is a quote from Centanni:&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;"We were forced to convert to Islam at gunpoint, don’t get me wrong here. I have the highest respect for Islam, and I learned a lot of good things about it, but it was something we felt we had to do because they had the guns, and we didn't know what the hell was going on."&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;What would you do in this situation? Would you pretend to convert? Will it go along with the “convert and ask for forgiveness later” belief? I believe that statement was said in “Kingdom of Heaven” It wouldn’t surprise me because; they said some pretty crazy things in that movie. Would you pretend, or even whole-heartedly regardless of how long a period deny Christ to prolong your life on this earth? When I say this I am by no means condemning any one! Look at Peter…the Rock…even he denied Christ to save his skin. So can I condemn these people for converting to Islam even if it is temporarily? By no means. What scares me is I don’t know what I would do in this situation. It is one thing to act all big and tough over here on the other side of the pond with no one pointing sharp poky things in my general direction. But the moment someone says do this or your head will be the new bowling ball…well I don’t know what I would do. It is a heart issue. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;So where is your selling point?  5 million dollars? Your life?  Someone else’s life? &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;I don’t have an answer to these things, I know what I should do but would I be able to perform under pressure?
